With Onoff Calls, each of your contacts gets a technical number (a "gateway" number) that lets your phone recognize the caller. This explains three common situations, all of which can be fixed.
What you see and why
| Situation | Explanation |
|---|---|
| An incoming call shows as "Unknown number", "Onoff Call" or "Onoff Business" | The caller isn't in your contacts. After the call, a notification gives you their number and offers to save it. |
| A saved contact still shows as unknown | Their number isn't in international format (06… instead of +33 6…), or the gateway numbers changed after a reinstall, an update, a phone change or turning Onoff Calls off. |
| Your address book contains unknown numbers or mixed-up records | Each time Onoff Calls is turned off and on again, new gateway numbers are created. An old number can then end up linked to another contact. |
Option 1: keep Onoff Calls and start fresh
- Turn off Onoff Calls in My account > Call settings.
- Sign out of the app, then delete it.
- Reinstall it from the store and sign back in.
- Turn Onoff Calls back on.
- Turn on automatic updates for the app in the store.
Afterwards, avoid turning off Onoff Calls, signing out or reinstalling the app: each of these recreates gateway numbers. Also save your contacts in international format (+33…).
Option 2: turn off Onoff Calls for good
- Turn off Onoff Calls in My account > Call settings.
- Delete the app, reinstall it and sign back in.
- Accept all permissions, but don't turn Onoff Calls back on.
Your address book will no longer be changed. You then call over the mobile network, or over the internet by turning on Call via Wi-Fi/data (useful abroad to avoid roaming).
