Calling Short and Special Numbers with Onoff Business

Whether it's reaching emergency services, customer support lines, or national hotlines, calling short or special numbers is a core part of mobile communication. But how does this work when you're using Onoff’s cloud-based mobile numbers instead of traditional SIM-based services?

1. What Are Short and Special Numbers?

Short numbers are typically 3 to 6-digit phone numbers used to access:

  • Emergency services (e.g., 112 or 911) 3 digits
  • National health lines, road assistance, or telecom helplines
  • Public or private service hotlines (3698, 3949)

Special numbers often include:

  • Premium-rate services (e.g., weather forecasts, voting lines)
  • Toll-free customer support numbers (e.g., 0800, 1800)

These numbers differ from regular phone numbers and are often carrier-specific or region-restricted.

2. Can You Call Short Numbers Using Onoff?

Short and special numbers can be reachable with Onoff in certain situations, but there are important differences compared with traditional SIM-based calling.

Short numbers with 3 digits:
Emergency numbers such as 112, 911, or 17 are not supported through the Onoff app. In urgent situations, always use your device’s native dialer with a SIM card or your phone’s built-in Wi-Fi calling service.

Short numbers with 4 digits:
Those short numbers can only be dialed from the mobile app.
Open the Onoff app on your mobile device.

  1. Make sure calling via Wi-Fi or mobile data is enabled in the app’s call settings.
  2. Dial the number using the correct format:
  3. For short numbers (for example, 3698), remove the country code and dial only the digits.

3. How to Call Special Numbers from the Onoff App

To attempt calling a short or special number:

  1. Open the Onoff App on your mobile
  2. Make sur the option Call with Wifi Data is ON
  3. Dial the short/special number as you would a regular number.
  4. If the number is supported:
  • The call will connect immediately.
  1. If the number is restricted or premium:
  • You may see a credit usage notification, or
  • You may receive an error if the number isn't reachable from Onoff infrastructure.

Some short numbers (like those starting with 08 in France) may be billed and deducted from your Onoff credit balance.

4. Credits, Charges, and Limitations

Credit Use:

  • Premium short numbers and special numbers (e.g., 08, 09 prefixes in France) may consume credits, even if you’re on an unlimited plan.
  • Toll-free numbers may or may not be treated as free depending on the country of your Onoff number.

You can purchase additional credits directly from the Onoff app if needed.

5. Roaming and Geographical Availability

Onoff is designed to avoid roaming charges by using VoIP infrastructure, but this also affects special number accessibility.

  • Some short numbers are geo-restricted—you can only call them if your Onoff number matches the country where the number is registered.
  • For example, a user with a French Onoff number may be able to call French 08xx numbers, but not UK-specific short codes.

This ensures compliance with local telecom rules but may limit global access to local short services.

6. What This Means for Onoff Business Users

For business users managing teams across multiple locations or customer support operations:

Advantages:

  • Trackable call activity via call logs, including special number interactions
  • Centralized credit management via the admin console
  • Multiple country numbers to route calls to appropriate short codes

Limitations to Be Aware Of:

  • No access to emergency services through the Onoff app
  • Credit consumption may apply to special services
  • Not all short codes will work, especially carrier-only or location-locked services

Best Practices:

  • Use SIM-based calling or your native dialer for emergency numbers
  • Keep credits topped up for services that may charge (e.g., 0800 support lines)
  • Inform your teams about which services are best accessed through Onoff vs. local dialers
